                                                 New Music Monday

Aranda - “Satisfied”

Here is my “New Music Monday” pick hit of the week. Unfortunately, radio has seemingly closed its doors on rock power ballads. If we were back in the 80’s, this would be massive. Great hook, and probably the best rock vocal I’ve heard since Chris Cornell in the peak Soundgarden years.

Come stop by The POP Room tonight and spin your pick hit of the week for us!

                                                     Classic!

Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Toni Braxton debuted on the Arsenio Hall show to perform her duet with Babyface “Give You My Heart”. A different nose but still a pint-size powerhouse performer right from the start.

Mariah Carey - ” Vision of Love”

Can’t believe it’s been over 20 years since Mariah came out of nowhere and stunned the world with her vocal range and soulful delivery. This was her first performance on the Grammy Awards. You can tell she’s a deer in headlights but she works through the nerves to deliver a knockout vocal performance by song’s end.

Tracy Chapman - “Talkin’ ‘Bout a Revolution”

One of Tracy’s first televised performances. I believe this was from the concert for Nelson Mandela. There was some technical difficulty so they sent Tracy out to sing one song to kill some time. I believe there was an explosion in sales after this performance. Rightfully so, there had never been a voice in the folk-pop world quite as soulful, stirring, and emotional as hers.

Olivia Newton John’s First Movie Appearance

Olivia Newton John is another of the timeless artists loved by The POP Room.    When she was 17 years old, she had her first appearance in a movie,”Funny Things Happen Down Under” (1965), where she sang “Christmas Time Down Under”. Shortly after, she was in a talent contest and won first prize, a trip to England. She got a one off record deal and released her first single and she was on her way to success. Come play some Olivia in The POP Room.. http://turntable.fm/the_pop_room

                                 Cher’s First Recording Ever!

Art photos of Cher from the mid 1960’s  and “Ringo, I Love You (Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!) which she recorded under the name, Bonnie Jo Mason.

Supposedly it failed as a single because disc jockeys thought that she sounded too much like a man… and therefore made the song a little gay.

Madonna has always been one to shock us, just for the sake of it, and it has served her well. We ate it up for years. Has she gone too far? Is she getting desperate since MDNA tanked?  Is it a ploy for attention? Or is it her new mission to show that sexuality does not die with age? Either way the shrieking crowed loved it.

Thanks to DJ CW.
